Why You Need to Understand Your Business Terrain

One of my mentees walked through the door of my office after a year. We exchanged pleasantries and got talking about his journey as an entrepreneur. Although, he is still an entrepreneur, a struggling one at that, he had veered off into unknown territory. Maybe the veering off into unknown territory is the major reason why he is struggling to keep his head above the water.

Yes, I am from the school of thought that says building your own business isn’t a rocket science. Truth be told, this is not completely true. To build a business is very challenging and tough. If you don’t have a thick skin and that don’t-know-how-to-give-up-attitude, you will throw in the towel too soon and find yourself a 9-5 job.

One of the reasons why it seems tough and challenging to build a business is when you don’t understand the business terrain. Every business belongs to an industry and that particular industry is the first business terrain. And if you don’t understand the industry, you will either struggle for a long time or the business will die slowly within 36 months.

So, to understand the industry is to research into the history of how it all started. You need to understand how the industry started, the growth, challenges, associations or unions, and policies that control the industry. What you don’t understand the genesis and the in-between; it will be difficult to succeed at it.

The second business terrain you need to understand is the business world itself. There are basic business principles and strategies that are required for you to be successful in the business world. If you are not familiar with these principles and strategies, chances are you will stumble into them, but before you eventually stumble into them, you will be struggling with sustaining your business.

These principles and strategies are hidden in business books, seminars, trainings, workshops, conferences and having business mentors and advisors. If you are in business you must expose yourself to the vast knowledge of how to manage and build successful business. You must read a lot to cover the important areas of business. Also, you must surround yourself with business advisors and be mentored by mentors who are truly successful. Once you master your industry and the business world, building a successful business won’t be a struggle.
