Before now, there were thriving businesses, thriving businesses that were dominating their spaces in their industries. Like Kodak and Xerox. If you are from the baby boomers generation and Gen X, you will remember the passionate romance we had with both Kodak and Xerox. However, businesses like that either saw the era rapidly changing, but they chose to be rigid. Or, they didn’t see it coming and they soon vanished into thin air—lost in the crowd—like the dinosaurs.

The
businesses from the baby boomers and X generation took the millennial or Y generation
businesses to be some form of joke. They thought technology advancement and the
dot.com bubble was some kind of circus performed by some weird teenagers who
barely had fore-knowledge of how to run structured businesses. They ignored the
changing approach to doing business, and the generation who are not excited by
brick and mortar offices, but by virtual offices (businesses and offices in the
cloud).
Again,
the era is fast changing. Ignore it at your own peril and soon your business
will join the endless list of disappearing businesses; it will be history. Take
note of this: the Y generation is leaving the spotlight for the Z-generation—they
are no longer babies and kids in diapers; they are fast becoming influencers
and so are their businesses. More reason why a Selena Gomez is most followed on
Instagram, ahead of Kim Kardeshian West, Beyonce, or Dwayne Johnson.
Those
who are not blind to the taking over of the center stage (like die-hard-Jeff
Bezos of Amazon) by the Z-generation are already preparing for the fasting
approaching invasion. How then have you positioned your business—or self—to be
relevant in the fast approaching or changing era? How do you intend to
perfectly fit into the Z-generation era that is already here? Here is what you
can do to position your business for the Z-generation.
First,
you must understand the Z-generation. They are restless. They have thousands of
distractions. They have earphones permanently plugged in their ears. They have
swag and listen to loud music. They are very lazy (yes very lazy), but very
informed, intelligent and extremely smart. They don’t spend time in front of TV
like the fast disappearing generations; they do virtually everything on their
phones. They are on Instagram, TikTok and Snap Chat. That’s where they live. They
hate boredom. They get bored easily. You can’t cage them; they are like
birds—they want to be free. They are extremely adventurous. That’s a lot about
them. Read or find out more about them yourself.
To
remain relevant in their generation, you have only one option—to create a
product or service for them. So, if you want your business to survive in this
new age, design a product for them. Feed their restlessness. Make them lazier
by creating what will do everything for them. Match them intelligence and
smartness. Give them what will keep them busy at all times. Once you do, don’t
stick to the traditional media to reach them, they don’t have any relationship
with that. Go find them in their homes—Instagram, TikoTok or Snap Chat. That’s
how to stay relevant in this new age.
